How to Stay Active During the Summer

Summer is a great time to enjoy outdoor activities, but high temperatures and humidity can make exercise more challenging. Staying active is important for overall health, digestion, energy, heart health, and mood, but it is also important to exercise safely during hot weather.

Start by choosing the right time of day. Early mornings and evenings are usually cooler and better for walking, cycling, gardening, or outdoor workouts. Try to avoid intense activity during the hottest part of the day, especially when heat alerts are in effect.

Hydration is also essential. Drink water before, during, and after activity, even if you do not feel very thirsty. The CDC notes that people who exercise on hot days are more likely to become dehydrated and develop heat-related illness. (CDC)

Choose light, breathable clothing and take breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. On very hot days, move your activity indoors. Walking in a mall, using a treadmill, stretching at home, swimming, or joining an indoor fitness class can help you stay consistent without overheating.

Listen to your body. Stop activity and move to a cooler place if you feel weak, dizzy, faint, overly tired, nauseated, or short of breath. The American Heart Association also recommends checking with a healthcare professional before starting or changing an exercise routine, especially if you have heart disease, diabetes, another chronic condition, or medical concerns. The goal is not to push harder in the heat. The goal is to stay active wisely. With smart timing, hydration, indoor options, and regular breaks, you can enjoy summer while protecting your health.

SIGIS Carbondale encourages patients to stay active, stay cool, and stay aware of heat-related risks during the summer months.
