Fun in the Sun—Safely! Tips to Protect Your Skin This Summer

Summer is the perfect season for outdoor fun—whether it’s a walk in the park, a picnic with
friends, or just soaking up some sunshine. But before you step out, it’s important to protect your
skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays.

One of the most effective ways to stay safe is by applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with
SPF 15 or higher. Make sure to cover all exposed skin 15 minutes before going outside and
reapply every two hours, especially if you’re swimming or sweating. Sunscreen helps prevent
painful sunburns and lowers your risk of skin cancer and early skin aging, according to the CDC.
Don’t forget your eyes and sensitive areas! Wear sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB
rays to reduce the risk of cataracts and protect the delicate skin around your eyes. A wide-
brimmed hat and lightweight, long-sleeved clothing can also shield your face, neck, and
arms from the sun’s direct exposure.

Try to stay in the shade, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when UV rays are at their
strongest. Planning activities earlier or later in the day can make a big difference in your sun
safety.

Remember, sun damage can happen even on cloudy days, so make sunscreen and sun
protection part of your daily routine. With a few smart habits, you can enjoy the sunshine without
risking your skin’s health.
