Why You Should Avoid Excessive Sun Exposure

Spending time outdoors is one of the best parts of summer, but too much sun exposure can create serious health risks. The sun’s ultraviolet rays can damage the skin even on cloudy days, and repeated exposure without protection can increase the risk of sunburn, premature aging, eye damage, and skin cancer. The CDC notes that sunburn at any age can increase a person’s risk of developing skin cancer later in life. (CDC)

Excessive sun exposure can also lead to dehydration and heat-related illness, especially during hot and humid weather. People who work outdoors, play sports, garden, attend events, or spend long hours in direct sunlight should take extra precautions.

The good news is that sun protection does not mean avoiding the outdoors completely. It means being smart. Try to stay in the shade when the sun is strongest, especially between late morning and mid-afternoon. Wear lightweight long sleeves, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses with UV protection. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher and reapplying it regularly when outdoors. (American Academy of Dermatology)

It is also important to check the UV Index before outdoor plans. The CDC recommends using sun protection when the UV Index is 3 or higher. (CDC)
Pay attention to warning signs such as severe sunburn, dizziness, weakness, headache, nausea, confusion, or feeling overheated. Move indoors, cool down, and seek medical help if symptoms are severe or do not improve.

Summer should be enjoyed safely. With shade, sunscreen, hydration, and smart planning, you can protect your skin and overall health while still enjoying time outside.

SIGIS Carbondale encourages patients to enjoy the summer while taking sun safety seriously.
